United Basic Economy: Carry-On Rule, Seats and What You Give Up
United Basic Economy gets you the same economy seat and the same inflight service as everyone else in the cabin, but on most routes you can't bring a full-sized carry-on bag. You also give up seat choice, boarding position and the ability to change your flight.
That last part is easy to miss. The carry-on rule is the one that costs people money at the airport, and the change rule is the one that costs them money before they ever leave home.
Here's how each piece works, based on United's own pages as of October 2026.
The carry-on rule
On most United Basic Economy tickets you get one personal item and nothing else in the cabin. It has to fit under the seat in front of you, and United's size limit is 9 x 10 x 17 inches (22 x 25 x 43 cm). A backpack, purse or laptop bag is the usual idea.
A standard carry-on (9 x 14 x 22 inches, including wheels and handle) is not allowed on board unless one of these applies:
- You're flying to South America, across the Atlantic or to international destinations across the Pacific. On those flights the carry-on allowance matches standard Economy.
- You're a MileagePlus Premier member, or travelling on the same reservation as one.
- You're a Star Alliance Gold member.
- You're the primary cardmember of a qualifying United MileagePlus credit card, you booked with that card, and you have Priority Boarding. Up to eight travellers on the same reservation get the benefit too. United says the United Gateway Card and the United MileagePlus Select Card don't qualify.
United also notes that if you're flying to Canada on a ticket bought before May 28, 2025, you still get a free carry-on. Tickets bought after that date follow the normal Basic Economy rule.
Some things don't count against your allowance at all: a jacket, an umbrella, food bought at the airport, a car seat or stroller, a diaper bag, and mobility devices such as wheelchairs and canes. Approved assistive devices can be carried on in addition to your personal item.
Here's the trap
If you turn up at the gate with a roller bag that won't fit under the seat, United will check it and charge $75 (for tickets bought on or after April 3, 2026). There is no free gate check on Basic Economy.
If you know you'll have a bigger bag, check it in the lobby instead. Checked bag fees on Basic Economy start at $45 if you prepay, $50 in the lobby and $75 at the gate for tickets bought on or after April 3, 2026. On older tickets the same tiers start at $35, $40 and $65.
United also checks your personal item at the counter if you check other bags there, so it's worth measuring before you go rather than hoping nobody looks.
Seats
In Basic Economy, United chooses your seat and tells you before boarding. You can't change it.
You can buy a seat assignment during booking and up until check-in opens. Economy Plus, the section with up to 6 inches of extra legroom, can only be bought at check-in on a Basic Economy ticket.
United's terms are blunt about groups: customers travelling together, including families, will not be able to sit together unless they pay for seats. There is one exception worth knowing. If you're travelling with up to two children under 12, they can sit next to the first adult listed on the reservation for free. You choose those seats after booking, in My trips on United's website or in the seat map in the United app. Anyone else in your party may be split up.
So a family of two adults and two young children can keep the kids with one parent at no cost, but the second adult may end up rows away unless you pay.
Boarding
You'll usually board in Group 6, the last group. The exceptions are the same people who get the carry-on: Premier members and their companions on the reservation, qualifying cardmembers and Star Alliance Gold members. On transatlantic and transpacific flights the group varies.
Boarding last matters more than it sounds. On a full flight the overhead bins are often gone by then, which is part of why the personal-item limit is enforced so firmly. Customers with disabilities or who need extra help can still pre-board.
Changes and refunds
This is the biggest difference between Basic Economy and standard United Economy.
United says the only way to change a Basic Economy trip is to cancel your flights and book new ones. If you cancel within 24 hours of buying, you get a full refund. After 24 hours you get a partial travel credit, not cash, and United's terms describe the fare as nonrefundable and having no value if unused.
Standard United Economy, by comparison, lets you change your flight after booking with no change fee. You pay only the fare difference if the new flight costs more.
If United cancels or changes your flight, United says it rebooks you under its usual procedures, so a schedule change by the airline doesn't leave you stuck with the Basic Economy limits.
Miles, status and upgrades
United's terms say MileagePlus members earn full Premier qualifying points on Basic Economy but no Premier qualifying flights. Premier members and eligible cardholders earn award miles at a lower rate, and general members without an eligible United card earn no award miles at all on Basic fares.
You also can't use upgrades of any kind on Basic Economy: no paid upgrades, mileage upgrades, Complimentary Premier Upgrades or PlusPoints. Premier members lose complimentary Economy Plus seating too.
Adding the missing pieces later
United lets you add United Economy benefits to a Basic Economy ticket in My trips. That gives you a full-sized carry-on, seat selection before check-in, and the ability to change or cancel without a change fee. Two catches:
- Everyone on the reservation has to add it, not just one person.
- It applies to every unflown part of the trip, so you can't add it to just the return.
At that point, compare the total against the price of a standard Economy fare for the same flights. Sometimes the standard fare is the simpler buy.

When Basic Economy makes sense
Basic Economy works well for a short trip with fixed dates where you can pack into a backpack and don't care where you sit. Solo travellers with no status get the clearest saving.
It's a poor fit if your plans might move, if you need a roller bag on a domestic flight, or if you're travelling as a group of adults who want to sit together. In those cases the bag fee, seat fees and the risk of losing part of the fare can wipe out the difference.
Before you book, check the fare rules for your exact route. United's rules differ for transatlantic, transpacific and South American flights, and the bag fee calculator on united.com shows the price for your trip.
Common questions
Can I bring a carry-on bag on United Basic Economy?
On most flights, no. United allows one personal item that fits under the seat, up to 9 x 10 x 17 inches. A carry-on is included on flights to South America, across the Atlantic and across the Pacific, and for MileagePlus Premier members, companions on their reservation, Star Alliance Gold members and primary cardmembers of a qualifying United card.
What happens if I bring a carry-on to the gate on Basic Economy?
For tickets bought on or after April 3, 2026, United charges $75 to check a bag at the gate that won't fit under the seat. Checking it in the lobby before security starts at $45. You can't gate-check it for free.
Can I pick my seat on United Basic Economy?
Not for free. United assigns your seat before boarding, but you can buy a seat assignment during booking and up until check-in opens. Economy Plus can only be bought at check-in.
Will my kids sit with me on United Basic Economy?
United says up to two children under 12 can sit next to the first adult on the reservation for free, selected after booking in My trips or the app. Other members of your party may be separated.
Can I change a United Basic Economy ticket?
Not directly. United says the only way to change a Basic Economy trip is to cancel and book new flights. Cancelling within 24 hours of purchase gets a full refund; after that you get a partial travel credit.
