American Airlines 2026 Bag Fees and Basic Economy Changes Explained

American Airlines raised its checked bag fees for tickets bought on or after April 9, 2026, and tightened Basic Economy for tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026. On a domestic trip that now means $45 for the first bag if you prepay online, $50 at the airport, and slightly more on Basic Economy. The date that matters is the day you bought the ticket, not the day you fly.

That last point trips people up. If you booked a summer trip in March and fly in July, your bags are priced under the old rules. If you booked in May for a June trip, the new ones apply.

The new checked bag fees

These are the fees American published for standard fares. Prepaying means paying on aa.com or in the American app before you get to the airport.

Route 1st bag (prepay / airport) 2nd bag (prepay / airport) 3rd bag
US domestic, Canada, short-haul international $45 / $50 $55 / $60 $200

Basic Economy tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026 have their own, slightly higher table:

Basic Economy route 1st bag (prepay / airport) 2nd bag (prepay / airport) 3rd bag
US domestic, Canada, Mexico, most of the Caribbean and Central America, Guyana $50 / $55 $60 / $65 $200
Panama $55 / $55 $100 / $100 $200
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru Airport only, $70 Airport only, $100 $200
Rest of South America $70 / $70 $100 / $100 $200

For South America (other than Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana and Peru), the higher Basic Economy fees started earlier, with tickets bought on or after April 9.

Here's the trap: on a domestic round trip, two travellers each checking one bag on Basic Economy and paying at the airport spend $220 on bags alone. Prepaying in the app saves $20 of that. Upgrading to Main Cabin often costs less than people expect once bags are counted, so price the whole trip, not just the fare.

What changed in Basic Economy

Three changes apply to Basic Economy tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026.

Seats now cost money to choose. Every Basic Economy passenger, including AAdvantage status members, can pick a seat for a fee. If you don't pay, American assigns one at check-in. Before this change, some members could choose seats on Basic Economy for free; that's gone for new tickets.

No upgrades. Basic Economy tickets aren't eligible for complimentary or systemwide upgrades, even for status members. If you're used to clearing upgrades on cheap fares, that ended for tickets bought after the cut-off.

Later boarding for most members. American says that, starting later in 2026, AAdvantage members without status or an eligible co-branded card will board in Group 7 on Basic Economy. Status members and eligible cardmembers keep their priority or preferred boarding.

What didn't change

Carry-ons and changes on Basic Economy

American's Basic Economy page lists one carry-on bag and one personal item, the same as Main Cabin, so you don't have to fit everything under the seat.

Changes are the bigger restriction. American's fare page says Basic Economy tickets can't be changed after the first 24 hours. Inside that 24-hour window you can cancel, but the qualifying booking window differs between versions of American's own page, so read the rules on your ticket before relying on it. Separately, US Department of Transportation rules entitle you to a refund if the airline cancels or significantly changes your flight and you choose not to travel, whatever fare you bought. Under the DOT's 2024 rule, a significant change includes a departure or arrival moving by more than three hours on a domestic flight or six hours internationally, a different airport, extra connections or a lower class of service. Refunds to a credit card are due within seven business days.

Is Basic Economy still worth it on American?

Sometimes. It works best when:

It works badly when you need to check bags, sit with a child or keep the option to change. In those cases the Basic Economy saving can vanish once seat fees and the higher bag fees are added, and you've still lost the ability to change the ticket.

How to compare fairly

Add up the full trip before choosing a fare: the fare itself, bags for each traveller in each direction, and seats if you need to sit together. On SlickFlight, every result shows the airline's fare name and the bag allowance, and the checkout total includes taxes and any service fee on its own line, so you can compare Basic Economy against Main Cabin on what you'll actually pay.

Common questions

How much is a checked bag on American Airlines in 2026?

On domestic, Canada and short-haul international tickets bought on or after April 9, 2026, the first bag is $45 if you prepay on aa.com or the app and $50 at the airport. The second is $55 or $60. Basic Economy on many routes costs $5 more per bag.

Can I choose a seat on American Basic Economy?

For Basic Economy tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026, you can choose a seat for a fee, and that includes status members. If you don't pay, a seat is assigned at check-in. Older Basic Economy tickets keep the rules they were sold with.

Can AAdvantage status members get upgraded on Basic Economy?

Not on Basic Economy tickets bought on or after May 18, 2026. American says those tickets aren't eligible for complimentary or systemwide upgrades, including for status members.

Who still checks a bag free on American?

American says status members keep complimentary bags, most AAdvantage co-branded cardmembers get their first eligible domestic checked bag free, and premium cabin passengers and active-duty US military personnel keep complimentary bags.
