The Fare Dropped After You Booked: Can You Get the Difference Back?

Sometimes, yes. In the first 24 hours after booking you can usually cancel for a full refund and buy the cheaper fare. After that, most airlines give the difference back as a credit with them, not as money on your card, and Delta generally doesn't give anything back at all unless the fare was refundable.

What you can recover depends on three things: how long ago you booked, which airline you're on, and which fare you bought. Here's how each one works.

The first 24 hours: cancel and rebook

US rules give you a clean way out right after booking. For tickets bought at least seven days before departure, the Department of Transportation requires airlines to either let you cancel within 24 hours for a full refund without a penalty, or let you hold the fare for 24 hours without paying.

All four big US airlines use the refund option on tickets bought directly from them:

So if you see the same flight drop on the day you bought it, the cleanest move is to cancel for the refund, confirm the money is going back to your card, and then book the lower fare.

Here's the trap: if the flight is less than a week away when you book, the federal 24-hour rule doesn't apply. Check the airline's own rules before assuming you can undo the booking.

After 24 hours: what each airline does

Change fee If you rebook at a lower price Basic fare
United None on Economy and above for US domestic and US-originating trips Travel credit for the fare difference Can't change unless you upgrade first
Delta None on Main Classic and above from the US, Canada and the Caribbean Delta says a price adjustment isn't possible unless the fare was refundable Change fee plus fare difference
American Check the total before you confirm Remaining value issued as a Trip Credit Can't change after 24 hours
Southwest None on any fare Refundable fares: refund or Transferable Flight Credit. Non-refundable: flight credit Must upgrade to Choice or above first

United

United's flexible booking page answers the question directly: if your new flight costs less, you receive a travel credit for the fare difference. That works for the same flight at a lower fare or for a cheaper flight on another day. You make the change yourself in My Trips, and there's no change fee on Economy, Economy Plus or premium tickets for flights within the US, to Mexico and the Caribbean, or international trips starting in the US.

Basic Economy is the exception. United won't let you change a Basic Economy ticket unless you upgrade it first, which usually wipes out the saving.

Delta

Delta is the strictest of the four. Its Low Fare Commitment page says that once the 24-hour window has passed, a price adjustment isn't possible unless you bought a refundable fare.

You can still change to another flight on Main Classic and above without a change fee from the US, Canada and the Caribbean, and Delta applies your ticket's remaining value to the new trip. But don't count on getting money or credit back just because the price fell. If you hold a refundable fare, cancelling for the refund and rebooking at the new price is the way to capture the drop.

American

American's travel credit page lists "remaining value when exchanging tickets" as one of the things it issues a Trip Credit for. In practice, if you change to a cheaper flight, the leftover value comes back to you as a Trip Credit.

Watch the details on that credit. Trip Credits can pay for flights and bags booked online, not seats. AAdvantage members who cancel on aa.com or the app with their number on the booking get 12 months to use a Trip Credit; non-members get 6 months. Basic Economy tickets can't be changed at all after the first 24 hours, so there's no way to capture a fare drop on one.

Southwest

Southwest has the most generous rule. It doesn't charge change fees, and its help center says that if your new flight costs less:

Basic fares can't be changed. To reprice one, you'd have to upgrade to Choice or above first, or cancel and rebook. Southwest says flight credit from a Basic fare expires six months from the date you originally booked, and a new booking takes on the earliest expiry date of any funds applied to it.

The traps that cost money

How to check for a fare drop

  1. Search the same flights, date and fare type on the airline's site, logged out, and compare to what you paid.
  2. If you're within 24 hours of booking and the flight was a week or more away when you bought, cancel for the refund and rebook.
  3. After 24 hours, open the trip in the airline's app or website and start a change to the same flight. The airline shows what you'd get back before you confirm.
  4. If the only result is a small credit, decide whether you'll realistically use it before it expires.

A ticket bought from the airline is repriced in that airline's own app or website, and SlickFlight can't change it for you. If you're booking a new trip and want fares on several airlines compared, a SlickFlight planner can price them side by side.

Common questions

Can I get money back if my flight gets cheaper after I book?

Cash back is realistic only in the first 24 hours, by cancelling for a full refund and rebooking, or on a refundable fare. After 24 hours on a non-refundable ticket, United, American and Southwest return the difference as a credit with the airline, and Delta says a price adjustment isn't possible.

Does Southwest refund the difference when the fare drops?

On refundable fares, Southwest says the difference can go back to your original payment method or be held as a Transferable Flight Credit. On non-refundable fares it's issued as a flight credit or Transferable Flight Credit, depending on the fare. Basic fares can't be changed without upgrading first.

What does United do if I change to a cheaper flight?

United says that if your new flight costs less, you receive a travel credit for the fare difference. There's no change fee on Economy and premium tickets for US domestic trips and international trips starting in the US. Basic Economy can't be changed unless you upgrade first.

Does Delta give a credit when the price goes down?

Delta's Low Fare Commitment covers the first 24 hours, when you can cancel for a full refund. After that, Delta says a price adjustment isn't possible unless you bought a refundable fare.

Can SlickFlight reprice a ticket I bought from the airline?

No. A ticket bought on the airline's website or app is changed there. If you're comparing a new booking, a SlickFlight planner can price it for you.
